What are amino acids?

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and play an important role in muscle recovery, muscle growth, and energy production. Additionally, they support the immune system and are involved in the production of enzymes and hormones.

What types of amino acids are there?

There are twenty different amino acids commonly found in proteins. These amino acids can be categorized into two main groups, depending on how the body obtains them.

  • Essential amino acids: These are amino acids that the body cannot produce itself and must be obtained through diet. There are nine essential amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.
  • Non-essential amino acids: These are amino acids that the body can synthesize from other molecules in the body, so they do not need to be directly obtained from food. There are 11 non-essential amino acids: alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.

BCAAs

BCAAs consist of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They support muscle protein synthesis, help reduce muscle breakdown, and promote recovery after exercise.
